Synopsis
Three investors, wolves in sheep’s clothes,
can’t for their life find heart or soul.
In their jets, they circle the globe,
preaching love and earning gold.
Smoke and mirrors is their game,
ministers, unions and kings enjoy their fame.
Gambling with open cards at the table,
where there’s no risk there’s only one aim:
the truth is a lie, ’cause lying is real –
when you get pranked, how does it feel?
Director’s Statement
After questioning the value of money with our recent film Soldate Jeannette we’re now up to question the power of money with our new feature WINWIN:
HUMOR BEGINS WHERE FUN HAS COME TO AN END.
WINWIN IS A SATIRE.
Politicians, unionists, judges and the police, entrepreneurs, magnats and tycoons: everybody loves investors. White knights in private planes arrive from their off-shore islands where their hick-ups influence the Dow Jones, the Hang Seng and the DAX. They bring hope to safe us all and everything: workers, children, the future basically, and they bring neverending growth and prosperity.
Our world of cultures became a world cultured by the global economy. A plutocracy where the wealthy classes rule and dominate our society. In this parallel sphere of power it is warm and cozy, it’s sunny and funny, it’s peachy and creamy: everything is possible at no risk.
TOPSY-TURVY! THE TRUTH IS A LIE, PERKY-PIE!
How we work
The unpredictable and the autopoiesis, which film makers usually try to eliminate by composing a movie script, become a potential by our working without a script. The immaturity at the beginning is required; in the course of the composition process, it allows to draw on findings, circumstances, persons and outcomes of collective talks, as well as on the improvisation of the performers. Only vague arcs are prescribed: a beginning, a middle, and an end of the story. And the financial bottleneck.
WINWIN has its point of origin in the variation of autobiographic stories of the leading actors, which came to light during casting talks. Fiction enters the documentary space made of life experience and original locations – aesthetically filtered in pictures that do not become documentary, but strictly stylized get to the bottom of a truth.
European Film Conspiracy PHILOSOPHY
A European Film Conspiracy is a fleeing entity, a philosophy, and a conspiracy in the spirit of its conceivers. It does not occupy a body, and it is neither a natural person nor a corporate entity. It is a vehicle, a phantom, a momentum, an engine of war that captures all those that make films without clinging to conventional framework conditions. Not to undermine the latter, but to exploit the free space beside them. The free space is wide. But the equipment is sparse. Through that space thoughts may fly on golden wings. For each project the Conspiracy comprises different members in this respect.
Besides Daniel Hoesl, who founded the Conspiracy a few years ago in the USA, Katharina Posch, Gerald Kerkletz, Julia Niemann and Georg Aschauerjoined the kitchen collective this time.
Recipes are not followed in this kitchen. The only ingredients used are those that are found. Through castings biographies are found. Experienced cooks are required to create – as if by magic – a dish out of it. This way the story develops, as an order of courses develops. Scene by scene. The accompanying wines are not forgotten. Three violins are not employed when one is enough. A grain of rice is a grain of rice. Picture for picture, a symphony of time.
Clown prince of Austrian cinema Daniel Hoesl wields satire like a crystal blade – more ornamental than lethal – in his second feature WINWIN, a playfully confrontational take on 21st century corporate capitalism that will leave no spectator indifferent.
Neil Young, The Hollywood Reporter
The masquerade of monster capitalism. Hoesl caustically channels his frustration over the financial imbalance from the consumerist-agricultural polarity of Soldier Jane to the hornet's nest of the upper echelons of investors. His belief that “the only religion left is faith in money and even debt” in this church of the free-market economy, which holds such menace within it, has a much bolder outline in the capitalistic cabaret of WINWIN.
Martin Kudlac, Cineuropa
Alexander Musik, ORF
Christoph Dostal
Whilst studying acting in Vienna Christoph Dostal won the leading role in Wolfgang Murnberger’s feature film For God and Country. The film won the Viennese Film Prize and was the official Austrian entry for Best Foreign Film at the Oscars. After that he trained ballet and modern dance at the London Contemporary Dance School and worked as a dancer in various, international dance companies. Steven Spielberg cast him for his Golden Globe winning TV series Band of Brothers. After receiving an invitation to play a series regular role in one of the longest running German TV series, Forbidden Love (ARD), Dostal moved from London to Cologne. Dostal’s new home is Los Angeles, where he plays leading roles in US independent films. Johanna Orsini-Rosenberg
Johanna Orsini-Rosenberg was already determined on a career at the age of four. Right after graduation she went to acting school at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, then to the Viennese Burgtheater, but also the German Theater Göttingen needed to be tested just as the Schauspielhaus Graz and once back in Vienna she worked on various different stages of the city. Numerous in-house productions, of which many premiered at unusual venues like the Hotel Orient or in an Inn in the Wurstelprater, lead to Moscow, St. Petersburg and London. And in 2014 to one of the most beautiful Palais, the Winterpalais of Prince Eugen, Der Zorn der Eleonore Batthyany (The rage of Eleonore Batthyany), 2011 the encounter with Daniel Hoesl and Soldate Jeannette, numerous festivals and the award for the best actress at Diagonale 2013 were the consequence. In 2015 she played in The Pursuit of Happiness by Julian Radlmaier, the film will be released in 2016.

DIRECTOR, PRODUCER
Daniel Hoesl, born 1982, studied multimedia arts before working as assistant director for Ulrich Seidl. He has been involved in a big number of art projects, collective film conspiracies, in the blowing up of buildings and the screaming interpretations of Franz Schubert’s songs. He’s a long distance swimmer globally exploring pools crawling back and forth. His debut feature Soldate Jeannette premiered at Sundance film festival and was awarded the Tiger award at Rotterdam film festival. His main concerns oscillate around the value and the price of money. WINWIN is his second feature film as co-conspirator of the European Film Conspiracy.
